John Bell & Edward Everett back-to-back campaign ferrotype badge. 1860. Approx. diam. 15/16 in.
Obverse featuring ferrotype portrait of Presidential Candidate John Bell with the perimeter legend "John Bell / 1860." Reverse with ferrotype of his running mate Edward Everett and the legend "Edwar[d] Everett / 1860".
A rare campaign token for the Constitutional Union party candidates John Bell and Edward Everett. The party consisted mostly of conservative former Whigs who wanted to avoid secession. They carried Bell's native Tennessee as well as Kentucky and Virginia. After the Battle of Fort Sumter, Bell sided with the Confederacy; however, many Constitutional Unionists remained loyal to the Union.
