[NATIVE AMERICAN] c. 1900 Sioux Beaded Hide Bridle with Iron Bit and Pendant Ornaments
A Sioux Beaded Hide Bridle with Iron Bit. Northern Plains, circa 1900.
A Sioux bridle of tawny hide, distinguished by an elongated triangular forehead panel worked in deep blue glass beads. A descending sequence of white triangular devices follows its central axis, diminishing toward the pointed lower end, while narrow white borders emphasize the tapering outline. The cheek straps terminate in rectangular beaded panels incorporating alternating blue-and-white crossbands and slender passages of black-and-white ornament, with exposed hide contributing to the design.
The bridle is fitted with an iron bit having a pronounced central port and suspended rings and chains. Beneath it hangs a perforated metal strip supporting fine chains with oval and triangular metal pendants. These freely suspended elements introduce movement below the closely worked beadwork, extending the decorative composition beyond the headstall itself.
The combination of hide construction and applied glass beads belongs to an established tradition of Plains equestrian equipment. Bridles were fashioned from materials including rawhide, tanned hide, and braided animal hair, sometimes incorporating metal bits.
Such equipment gave public expression to the importance of horses within Plains communities. Elaborately adorned mounts figured in celebrations and processions, displaying family standing and the accomplishments of the makers who furnished them. These traditions continued into the reservation period, when mounted parades remained prominent at fairs and other gatherings.
