[NATIVE AMERICAN] Sioux Man’s Red Wool Shirt with Beaded Hide Strips and Long Fringe

A Sioux Man’s Red Wool Shirt with Applied Beaded Hide Strips. Northern Plains. Beadwork likely dates to the 1890s; assembly may have been later.

A striking man’s shirt of scarlet wool, ornamented with broad beaded hide strips extending over the shoulders and down the front and back, with corresponding bands along the sleeves. Closely worked white grounds carry groups of elongated red points, interrupted by transverse devices in yellow, green, and contrasting shades of blue. Small black triangular elements form open circular arrangements between the larger motifs. The red ornament echoes the color of the cloth, drawing the separately worked panels into a coherent decorative scheme.

Long cut-hide fringe falls from the sleeves and the lower ends of the front strips. A small horizontal panel beneath the neckline carries dark blue triangular devices against a pale blue ground, with a scalloped hide edge and pendant ties. Dark binding and pale lacing define the neck opening, while contrasting light-colored selvage borders finish the cuffs and lower hem. The uninterrupted central field of red wool gives particular prominence to the white beadwork.

The use of wool cloth with beaded hide panels has historical precedent in Indigenous shirtmaking. For example, one similar red wool Ute shirt dated circa 1870–1880 in the National Museum of the American Indian combines hide fringe with broad beaded strips that the museum identifies as reflecting Central and Northern Plains styles, particularly those of the Lakota. Such garments demonstrate how purchased textiles were incorporated into established forms of dress and ornament.

Both Native-tanned and commercially chrome-tanned hide are present in the shirt. Its beaded strips likely date to the 1890s, though its complete assembly as offered here may have occurred later. The preservation and reuse of worked panels is documented in Plains clothing, including garments in the Gilcrease Museum assembled from earlier beaded objects.

A fine example.
