A Pair of Stamped White-Metal Peyote Waterbird Earrings. Native American Church.
An elegantly articulated pair of pendant earrings, each composed of a domed circular mount, an elongated waterbird, and a separately suspended, fan-shaped tail. The upper roundels carry four-part stamped devices within closely impressed borders. Small connecting rings permit the birds and their tails to move independently, lending animation to the extended silhouettes.
The birds are rendered with broad, downcurving wings, narrow upper sections, and sharply incised V-shaped lines defining their bodies. Oval stamps ornament the wings and tails, while repeated short impressions follow the lower contours. This restrained repertoire of marks gives coherence to the separate components without obscuring the clarity of the bird forms. The softly reflective surfaces contrast with the darker recesses of the stamped ornament.
The waterbird occupies a central place in the imagery of the Native American Church, appearing on ceremonial equipment, personal adornment, and the boxes used to preserve devotional possessions. Its treatment in metal jewelry is documented in the work of Southern Plains artists, including a hammered-and-stamped pin made in 1959 by the Pawnee artist Julius Ceasar, now in the National Museum of the American Indian, which incorporates both waterbird and ceremonial tipi imagery. Such objects situate the motif within a specifically religious artistic tradition rather than treating it as a generalized representation of a bird.
The pair offered here is particularly effective in its combination of a readily legible silhouette, carefully repeated surface ornament, and freely moving pendant elements.
