Springfield Model 1888 Trapdoor Rifle. Springfield, Massachusetts. Lockplate stamped with a Federal eagle and "US / Springfield," and "1884" to the rear of the hammer as well as to the top of the barrel. Cartouche reads: "SWP/1891" located to the center of the wrist. Cut-down barrel: 24 1/2 in. Overall: 40 3/4 in. Rear sight appears to be a reproduction.
WITH Modern leather sling. 22 1/2 in.
Most of the metal is smooth with a thick, pleasing, chocolate patina over all surfaces, and a walnut stock and forearm with minor pitting throughout, likely from usage.
