M1850 officer's sword. Baltimore, Maryland: Canfield Brothers and Company, n.d. Ricasso stamped with standing knight logo and "W / Clauberg / Solingen." Reverse etched "Canfield Bros / & Co / Baltimore." Spine etched with "Iron Proof." Obverse blade etched with "U.S." Reverse blade etched with eagle and banner saying "E PLURIBUS UNUM." Blade approx. 31 in. Overall length 36 3/4 in.

ProvenanceFrederick "Frank" Logan Collection

Complete in leather scabbard. The blade exhibits a dark patina with very light pitting near the tip. The brass guard is also darkly and warmly patinated with some gold accents. Original leather washer is present. The grip is of scarcely-seen gutta percha imitation shagreen, with an original wire wrap.

This M1850 officer's sword was made by W. Clauberg of Solingen, Prussia, one of the most prolific makers of swords for import to the United States in the 19th century. Their swords were found in the U.S. with different retailers adding their mark to the blade, such as the Canfield Brothers of Baltimore, per the etched name on the ricasso reverse. The Canfield Bros. provided artillery to the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. area, as well as surrounding parts of Maryland, during the Civil War. It was likely that the parts of this sword were imported from Europe, then assembled in Baltimore.

From the collection of Frederick "Frank" Logan. Frank Logan was a dedicated Civil War enthusiast and respected member of the collecting community. He began his lifelong passion for Civil War history as a relic hunter in the mid-1970s. Over the decades, that early interest grew into a deep passion for all aspects of the Civil War, with his collecting efforts eventually centering on Maryland-related artifacts and material culture.

A member of the Maryland Arms Collectors Association, he was well regarded among fellow collectors for his knowledge and appreciation of historical artifacts. Carefully assembled over many years, his collection reflects decades of searching, study, and a genuine dedication to preserving pieces of American Civil War history.
