M1840 Heavy 'Wristbreaker' cavalry saber. Cabotville, [Massachusetts]: Ames Manufacturing Co., 1849. Ricasso stamped "AMES MFG CO / CABOTVILLE / 1849" and "US / WD" on the reverse. Blade 35 1/2 in., overall 43 1/4 in.

A fine "wristbreaker" cavalry saber by the famed Ames Mfg Company. The blade has a nice gunmetal finish throughout with some modeling. The brass guard contrasts nicely with the rest of the sword. The wood grip is present. It comes with the correct scabbard for this sword, which exibits light pitting evenly throughout.

A fine sword with a desirable date and manufacturer. This model would have seen use leading up to and throughout the Civil War, in some cases being more favored than its M1860 replacement.
