Portrait of a French captain
Watercolor and gouache bone or celluloid
19th century
Diam. 3 in., framed to 5 1/2 x 6 in.
Contemporary or near-contemporary wood frame
A young French man poses in his uniform. He wears a blue and white habit-veste with a high, red collar. Based on his gold epaulettes, he was most likely a captain. Pinned to his chest are two medals, most likely the Legion of Honour (left) and the Decoration of the Lily (right). While this officer looks strikingly similar to a young Napoleon III, his uniform dates him a few decades earlier than Napoleon III.
