A collection of 18th and early 19th century coopered wooden military accouterments, including:
1. Stave and hoop canteen. N.p., 18th c. Marked "M.L" to both heads. Approx. 6 x 7 1/2 x 7 3/4 in.
A fair example of the canteens employed by Continental forces during the American Revolutionary War. This cask-style canteen, a miniaturized version of the era's wine and liquor casks, is composed of 11 staves, a pair of heads, 4 wrought iron bands, a raised spout and the original wooden stopper. The spout is bored with 3 holes, through 2 of which runs a period cord. Traces of the original black paint remain to the surface. The significance of the stamped "M.L" to the heads is unknown.
2. Stave and hoop canteen. N.p., 18th c. Marked "M.L" to both heads. Approx. 3 3/4 x 4 x 5 1/4 in.
Effectively a smaller and better-preserved version of the previous piece, absent the stopper, this canteen retains significant red paint to the 9 staves' interiors and black paint and lacquer to the exteriors. The wire loop connects to a single screw eye, with evidence of another having been removed.
3. War of 1812 era soldier's canteen. P. P. & H, ca. 1812. Marked "P.P. & H. Patent" to the head. Approx. 5 1/4 x 5 3/8 x 5 in.
Composed almost entirely from a single piece of wood, with an additional stave, a raised spout, a pair of turned wooden heads, and a pair of wrought iron hoops with a sling keeper to each, the design combines aspects of the early American rundlet with those of the drum canteen popularized by the early 19th century. The patent holder, "P. P. & H.," is yet to be conclusively identified.
4. Triangular bracket and iron hook. N.p., 18th c. Marked "M.L" to one of the staves and to the underside. Approx. 17 x 8 1/4 x 5 in.
A large vessel composed of 17 staves, 2 teardrop-shaped wrought iron hoops and a single head, overall covered in black paint. To the lower hoop, a period iron hook has been affixed with a twisted length of modern metal.
