Reproduction of a Maynard carbine. Half stock single-shot breech-loading rifle. .35 caliber. One lock plate marked with patent information, the other lock plate marked with production information. Serial number stamped underneath tang. Barrel approx. 28 in. long. Overall length 43 1/2 in.
The barrel's metal is of a darker color than the lock plate and receiver's patina. Both the tang and the butt exhibit a checkerboard pattern. In addition to the front sight, this carbine also has a Vernier sight, something not commonly found on Maynard rifles. Besides a few scuffs and small cracks in the stock, this reproduction is in overall good condition.
The Maynard carbine was used significantly by the Confederacy during the Civil War — it's reported that 6,770 Maynards were in Confederate hands. Having a reputation for accurate long-range shooting, the Confederates made extensive use of the Maynard carbine, especially during the Siege of Charleston.
