Van der Krogt (Vol. I) #4700: 1A; TNH Doet4 1001

A superb and attractive map of Provence based on the 1591 map by Pierre-Jean Bompar from the 1613 Latin quarto edition of Hondius's reissue of the Mercator Atlas.

Jodocus Hondius acquired the copperplates for the grand Mercator atlas in 1604 and published a revised edition in 1606, retaining 107 maps from the original 1595 edition and adding 37 newly engraved maps, including this one. Dutch copperplate engraver embellished the work with elaborate and distinctive artistic additions, including a complex compass rose, decorative cartouches, and intricate vessels sailing among sea monsters. The map depicts the region of Provence, including Avignon and the Rhône delta.
