A finely colored engraved map of Scotland from Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first modern Atlas. Ortelius derived the map from Merator's 8-sheet wall map of the British Isles, first published in 1564.
Ortelius first published the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum in 1570 and continually reissued the atlas in various formats until his death in 1598. Oriented with west at the top, the maps feature a detailed record of the towns and cities throughout Scotland.
