The Winning Hand. Albumen caricature CDV. N.p.: N.p., [1864]. Titled in plate.
A pro-McClellan political caricature from the 1864 presidential election. President Lincoln and General McClellan, in uniform, are engaged in a card game. At stake is the White House, represented in miniature on the games table between them. The artist evidently favors McClellan, giving him a full house.
Other examples of the caricature are on the mounts of New York publisher Gurney & Son. Those examples have the title printed to the mount, rather than in negative, suggesting this example is a later issue or a contemporary pirated copy.
An example is illustrated in Lincolniana Historical Portraits and Views...Collection of Americana of Frederick Hill Meserve. New York: Privately Printed, 1915. p. 46.
