Outdoor CDV of President Abraham Lincoln’s initial resting place at the Oak Ridge Cemetery public receiving vault in Springfield, Illinois, ca. May 1865. Presented on a horizontal-format mount with a fine double-ruled border. The lower right margin of the image area features a clear, vertical printed copyright notice reading: Entered according to the Act of Congress, in the year 1865, by S. M. Fassett, in the Clerk’s Office of the District Court of the United States, for the Northern District of Illinois. The verso displays an elegant backmark for S.M. Fassett’s New Gallery, 114 & 116 South Clark St., Chicago, accompanied by a faint period pencil notation reading "Lincoln / Tomb".

A somber, highly poignant photograph capturing the final destination of the most famous funeral procession in American history. The composition focuses on the hillside limestone frontage of the Oak Ridge receiving vault. Standing among the bare trees and blanketing the grassy slopes above the tomb entrance is a gathering of spectators and honor guards who assembled during the interment ceremonies.

On 4 May 1865, following a multi-week journey through major northern metropolises, the funeral train arrived at its final destination in Springfield. While a massive monument would later be constructed on the grounds, Lincoln's coffin, along with that of his son Willie, was placed temporarily inside this hillside public receiving vault. Samuel M. Fassett acquired the rights to print and distribute this historic scene captured by a local on-site photographer to meet the astronomical public demand for Lincoln funeral images. The presence of the crisp internal 1865 federal copyright line directly on the face of the mount signifies an authentic, immediate postwar production, making this a prime historic artifact for advanced collectors of Lincolniana.

Ver good. The print retains a warm tone, strong contrast, and excellent clarity, The mount is untrimmed and free from material defects.
