Outdoor albumen CDV of the Ohio Statehouse. Columbus, Ohio: E.S. Walker, 1865. Photographer's imprint to mount verso.
A somber view of the Ohio Statehouse draped in black fabric to honor the death of President Abraham Lincoln, whose funeral train was passing through Columbus. Onlookers are gathered outside the gates of the statehouse, as well as on the steps toward the entrance.
Lincoln's funeral train made 13 stops on its way from Washington, D.C., to Springfield, Illinois — Columbus was the ninth stop. In addition to the black fabric, statehouse staff hung a sign above the front entrance that said one of Lincoln's famous quotes: "With malice toward none, with charity for all..." It's said that 50,000 Ohioans visited Lincoln's hearse when the train stopped on 29 April 1865; visitors could attend the public viewing any time between 9:30 a.m. and 6 p.m.
