Partly engraved Army officer's commission signed by Abraham Lincoln as President of the United States, and Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton. Washington, D.C., 18 March 1864. 1 page, 15 x 19 in., matted and framed to 21 x 24 in., on vellum, with original blue wafer seal.
A fine officer's commission signed by President Abraham Lincoln appointing Stephen R. Reynolds as Assistant Adjutant General of Volunteers with the rank of Captain by brevet to date from 20 June 1863.
Stephen R. Reynolds was commissioned into Company E of the 99th New York Infantry in 1861 as a second lieutenant. He was then discharged for promotion and commissioned into the US Volunteers Adjutant Generals Department, as per this document, on 29 July 1863. He was mortally wounded a year later at the bloody Battle of Cold Harbor, Virginia, on 3 June 1864. He would finally succumb to his wounds on 30 July 1864.
A fine commission bearing the signature of Abraham Lincoln and attributed to a captain who would later die of wounds received at the Battle of Cold Harbor.
