For President, Abraham Lincoln..."Peace Commissioners". Printed silk ribbon. N.p., [1864]. 5.5 x 3.75 in.
A rare 1864 campaign ribbon featuring a bust view of a beardless Abraham Lincoln. Held during the Civil War, the 1864 election served as a referendum on Lincoln's leadership and the future of the Union. Lincoln's generals, Ulysses S. Grant, William T. Sherman, and Philip H. Sheridan are all listed as "Peace Commissioners." While the "Peace Democrats" campaigned to end the war and sue for peace with the Confederates, the ribbon here suggests that the path to peace is through winning the war with Lincoln's generals, who were securing victories across the South.
A fine piece of ephemera from the 1864 presidential election of the United States of America.
