An elegant bust view of an aged Rebecca Pomray (1817-1884), gaze directed towards the side of the photographer's lens with a slight smile. Her white hair is elegantly curled around her head. A charming brooch is fastened a around her neck, bordered by a dark frock and frilled white collar.
Rebecca Pomroy was an accomplished nurse and volunteered her services to Dorothea Dix, Superintendent of Army Nurses, at the start of the War. She relocated to Washington, D.C. by September 1861 and began working at Georgetown Hospital and Columbian College.
She was summoned to the White House in early 1862 at the time of Willie Lincoln's death to nurse both Tad and Mary Todd Lincoln back to health. President Lincoln reportedly told her, "Tell your grandchildren how indebted the nation was to you in holding up my hands in time of trouble."
Pomroy returned to hospital work, but returned to the White House in 1864 when Mary Lincoln was suffering from injuries received after falling from her carriage.
A charming view of a beloved employee from the Lincoln household.
