Vignedtted profile bust-length studio portrait. Albumen CDV . Washington, D.C. & New York: Brady's National Photographic Portrait Galleries, n.d. O-89B.
Period pencil inscription to mount verso reads: "A Lincoln given to W. M. Jones Chief of Consular Bureau Dept of State - Wash. D.C. 1863-65 and carried by him for several yrs.
A scarce carte de visite (CDV) photograph of Abraham Lincoln in profile. This attractive "from life" view of the Great Emancipator is known as the "Penny Pose,” as it is the photograph used as the inspiration for Lincoln's bust on the penny.
This copy was owned by W.M. Jones, who in 1864 became private secretary to U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward, and then for his son Frederick W. Seward. His talents and efficiency were rewarded with a position as chief clerk of the Consular Bureau in the State Department. During his tenure, he corresponded regularly with the United States consuls stationed globally. After the war, he was appointed by President Johnson as the U.S. Consul at the Clifton Consulate in Canada.
Significant to this fine Lincoln image, Jones was at Ford's Theater the night of the President's assassination. According to the inscription, Jones carried the view for several years, evidently a treasured memento.
