An election vote tally sheet from the 1856 Presidential election, which lists Abraham Lincoln and his law partner, William Herndon, as electors. Lincoln had served in previous elections as an elector for the Whig Party, but this was his first time serving for the newly formed Republican Party.
Lincoln was involved with the Republican Party from its formation, attending the Convention at Bloomington in May 1856 that formally established the Illinois Republican Party. He gave the final speech at the convention, calling for the preservation of the Union. The next month, he attended the National Convention, where he received significant support on the vice presidential ballot, though William Dayton was ultimately chosen.
A document that records a significant stepping stone in Lincoln's political career.
