A collection of four (4) photographs and several pine needles from Mount Vernon. While the images have no date, a note related to the pine needles places this collection in 1861 — the note reads in full: "From Washington's Tomb, procured by L.M. Phillips March 2d 1861."
George Washington died at Mount Vernon on 14 December 1799. Four days later, he was buried in what is now the Old Tomb at Mount Vernon — his and Martha's bodies were moved in 1831 to the New Tomb, where they among other family members remain today. Two of the photos included in this lot show the New Tomb, complete with the fences and white pillars outside its entrance.
