m1860-style Knights of the Pythias sword. Blade acid-etched "Maurice Deiser". Blade 30 1/8 in. Overall 38 in.
M1860 style Knights of the Pythias sword identified to Maurice Deiser, as etched on the blade. This very ornate sword has a brass guard that has aged to a dark tone throughout. The blade remains bright with a beautiful acid etching down both sides of the blade.
The kidney-shaped counter guards (one folds down) are cast with cross sabers & shield on one side and "U R" on the other. These letters stood for "Uniform Rank". Many Civil War Veterans were members of this group from its start due to its militaristic style drills and ceremonies. The grip shows wear. The scabbard is intact and also has beautiful mounts representing the Biblical figure Samson pulling down the pillars. "FCB" is noted throughout the piece, standing for "FRIENDSHIP, CHARITY, and BENEVOLENCE" - the three cardinal principles of the Order.
