M1840 "wristbreaker" heavy cavalry saber. [Solingen, Germany]: Clemen & Jung. Ricasso stamped "C & J". Blade 35 3/4 in. Overall 43 1/2 in.
Nice example of the M1840 Heavy Cavalry Saber, famously known as the 'Wristbreaker". This model of cavalry sword was used during the Mexican War well through the American Civil War. Even though replaced with the lighter M1860, this remained popular with many cavalrymen as it took less effort to swing the blade to due the momentum gained by its weight.
The brass guard has a nice aged patina throughout and retains the original leather and wire wrap. The blade has a nice toned-down gray with some modeling noted. Scabbard is correct for this model. You can clearly see the "C & J" stamped on the ricasso - Cleman & Jung, Solingen.
