Portrait of an artilleryman from the National Guard
Miniature on bone or celluloid
1791
Diam. 2 3/4 in.
Circular brass frame.
"Collection Militaire / Bernard Franck" paper coat of arms affixed to verso, alongside period ink inscription: "Artillere de la Garde Nationale / 1791".
Provenance: Bernard Franck (1848-1924) (Collection label to verso, numbered 354).
A handsome portrait of a French artilleryman in uniform with red epaulettes holding a brush and palette in the middle of painting a portrait. The label identifies the officer as a member of the nascent National Guard, first organized during the French Revolution, with the Marquis de Lafayette elected as its first commander-in-chief on 14 July 1789. In October 1791, all active citizens were obliged to enlist in the National Guard.
Bernard Franck (1848-1924) was a Parisian veteran of the Franco-Prussian War for which he was awarded the Médaille Militaire. A prodigious collector, he especially prized miniature portraits of military subjects, such as this fine example.
