Portrait of a French light infantry officer

Watercolor and gouache on bone(?)

19th century

Diam. 2 1/2 in., framed to 4 3/4 x 5 in.

Contemporary or near-contemporary wood frame

A fine portrait of a French light infantry officer. He is seen in a dark blue coat with a high red collar, as well as silver piping, epaulettes, and buttons. Based on the epaulettes, it's probable that this man was a captain. A signature can be seen toward the right of the portrait, but remains partially covered by the frame.
