Nicknamed “The Stars and Bars,” this flag was adopted by the seceding confederate states in 1861. Causing confusion on the battlefield, due to its similarity to the Union’s “Stars and Stripes,” it was replaced after the first battle of Bull Run with the highly recognizable southern cross that is most associated with the Confederacy today.
