Jan Toorop (1858-1928)
XXVII Internationaal Eucharistisch Congres Amsterdam
Lithograph
The Hague, The Netherlands
J. Smulders Co.
1924
25 3/4 x 42 3/4 in.
A sweeping Art Nouveau by Dutch artist Jan Toorop (1858-1928). Advertising the 1924 Eucharistic Congress in Amsterdam, the work is appropriately dominated by a luminescent Eucharist with the chalice and host. Mary, crowned in a halo of stars, opens her arms wide, her flowing robes dynamically rendered by Toorop.
Eucharistic Congresses began in the late 19th century and became particularly popular in the Low Countries. The gatherings bring together clergy, religious, and laity to bear witness to the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist.
