Inspired by Balinese wayang kulit shadow puppets and Indonesian textiles, the richly colored poster advertises a Colonial-Era art exhibition at the Kaiser Wihlm Museum in Krefeld, Germany, titled Niederländisch-Indische Kunstausstellung [Dutch East Indies Art Exhibition].

The Dutch Indies, comprising the modern state of Indonesia, were brought under Netherlandish influence by the Dutch East India Company during the 18th century and came under direct Dutch administration in 1800. The Japanese occupation dismantled much of the Dutch colonial state during World War II, and following Japanese surrender, Indonesia declared Independence. 

Johan Thorn Prikker was an eclectic Dutch artist who experimented in several media, including stained-glass windows, tapestries, and lithography. His influences were similarly diverse, drawing from Impressionism, the Art Nouveau movement, and Symbolism.
