Half-plate horizontal outdoor scene tintype. N.p., ca. late 1860s–1870s. Housed in a period wood and leatherette case or brass mat and preserver assembly.
An imposing, large-format Civil War-era industrial view capturing an iron horse paused on the line directly beside a trackside passenger station and platform. Framed in profile or broad three-quarter view, the massive steam locomotive stands halted along the ballast rails, showing its tender, boiler bands, steam domes, and iron cowcatcher. Leaning out from the open cab windows are the working railroad crewmen, caught mid-run during a routine depot stop.
The accompanying depot architecture, platform timbers, and surrounding right-of-way ground the mechanical titan in the expanding network of American rail commerce. While small-format cartes de visite and stereoviews of trains were commercially published during the railroad expansion era, unique, large-format wet-plate direct positives executed on generous half-plate iron sheets remain highly uncommon.
