Half-plate horizontal studio portrait daguerreotype. N.p., ca. early-to-mid 1850s. Housed in a full dark leatherette case.
A charming antebellum group portrait documenting a class of ten young female academy classmates arranged in a formal studio setting. Staged in two tiers to accommodate the group across the broad half-plate format, five seated girls occupy the foreground flanked by five standing classmates directly behind them. The students, ranging in age from young girls to early adolescents, exhibit center-parted hairstyles with neatly ringleted locks and tucked tresses. They are attired in period youth fashion, including off-the-shoulder short-sleeved frocks, tiered flounced skirts, and woven checkered and gingham day dresses. The girl seated on the far left holds a small book or slate, emphasizing their academic setting. Subtle, delicate flesh-tinting warms the cheeks across the sitters' faces, heightened by fine touches of blue pigment applied to several of the dresses.
Large-format cased group portraits of this scale posed a significant technical hurdle for 1850s studio operators: maintaining precise focal depth across multiple subjects while preventing movement blur during extended exposure times required serioius skill. Half-plate daguerreotypes featuring large groups, especially of students, are scarce and visually captivating.
