Stereoscopic outdoor daguerreotype, approx. 3 1/4 x 6 3/4 in. [New York/Canada]: N.p., ca. 1854-1856. In an original presentation format featuring two arched-top rectangular apertures beneath a black reverse-painted glass passe-partout mat, sealed along the perimeter with original black binding tape for viewing in a Brewster-style stereoscope. 

A striking outdoor landscape, taken from an elevated vantage point on the Canadian bluffs above the Niagara River Gorge, looking east toward the American Falls. Pictured in the left foreground are the rustic post-and-rail viewing terraces, tiered embankments, and wooden stairs cut into the cliff edge, with a solitary tourist visible leaning along the railing to gaze across the abyss. Beyond the gorge, the American Falls plunge over the rocky shelf into an atmospheric cloud of rising river mist, flanked by the timbered brow of Goat Island.

While stereoscopic albumen photographs of Niagara Falls flourished by the late 1850s and 1860s, surviving daguerreian stereoviews are significant rarities of early American photography. Photographers such as Platt D. Babbitt and the Langenheim Brothers began experimenting with stereoscopic formats at Niagara during the brief 1853-1856 window, but the extreme technical demands of preparing, exposing, and developing paired silvered plates in the field meant that very few were ever produced. To encounter an intact, untouched stereoscopic daguerreotype capturing one of North America’s most celebrated natural wonders in its original mid-1850s passe-partout glass binding is an exceptional occurrence.

Very good condition overall. A few rub marks are visible on both plates. The plates retain brilliant surfaces with strong contrast, rich tones, and excellent depth. We note light peripheral tarnish along the upper and interior glass aperture borders, with minor minute flecks beneath the glass. The reverse-painted black glass mat remains intact without cracks, displaying light surface wear and minor perimeter flaking to the black paper binding tape at the extreme corners and edges.
