Pair of sixth plate "magic background" daguerreotypes housed in embossed leatherette cases, ca. early to mid-1850s. Comprising:

1. Portrait of a Young Gentleman: Seated studio portrait of a handsome young man with center-parted hair curled at the wings, attired in a tailored dark frock coat, high white collar, bow tie, and a finely patterned brocade silk waistcoat. The image features a classic "magic background" luminous oval vignette effect, isolating the subject against a bright, softly glowing halo.

2. Portrait of a Young Woman: Seated studio portrait of a seated young woman with styled hair and white lace collar, wearing floral hair ornaments and a dark day dress. Presented with a striking "magic background" effect featuring a distinctive white zig-zag pattern encircling the central subject.

"Magic background" daguerreotypes represent a highly desirable subset of antebellum photography where the operator physically manipulated the plate, buffing process, or cover glass to create a luminous, floating vignette or textured frame around the sitter. Both portraits demonstrate exceptional execution of these specialized gallery techniques.

[Daguerreotype, Early Photography, 19th Century Photography, Sixth-Plate, Cased Images, Magic Background, Vignette, Antebellum Portraiture, Brocade Vest, Victorian Fashion, Leather Cases, Embossed Cases, Frosted Glass, American Daguerreotypes]

Good to very good overall. The portrait of the gentleman is clear and crisp with strong contrast. The portrait of the woman retains good detail with scattered tarnish spots. Both are housed in half leatherette cases.
