This compelling studio portrait presents a fascinating example of early in-camera double exposure. Rather than being photographed together in a single shared frame, the sitters appear as two distinct, superimposed exposures on a single silvered plate. At left, the wife is captured at a smaller scale and greater focal distance, attired in a dark gown with an elaborate scalloped white lace collar. At right, her husband appears much larger and closer to the lens, rendered in crisp detail wearing a finely patterned silk brocade waistcoat, dark frock coat, and dark neck stock. A subtle vertical demarcation through the center field marks the shifting background and dual exposure, creating an eerie, dreamlike disparity in scale and depth between the two figures.

Likely the result of an operator experimenting with split-exposure lens caps to capture spouses at different times, early daguerreian anomalies on large-format half plates, such as this one, remain highly sought after by collectors.

Good to very good condition. The plate retains strong tonal contrast and fine definition across the sitters' faces and garments, exhibiting typical scattered wipe marks, pinpoint dusting, and perimeter tarnish along the inner mat edge. The case remains complete, with some finish loss to the embossed leather covers consistent with age.
