Wilson & Havens, Savannah, Georgia. Circa 1875–1878.
Stereoview of the Cheyenne couple Medicine Water and Mochi with the interpreter Romeo, posed beside stacked cannon barrels at Fort Marion in St. Augustine, Florida. Medicine Water wears a prominent breastplate over a patterned shirt, with a blanket covering his lap. Mochi sits at the left with a blanket around her shoulders, while Romeo stands behind the couple in a dark suit, holding a broad-brimmed hat.
The reverse bears the imprint "Photographed by Wilson & Havens, Savannah, Ga.," and a printed label numbered 145 identifying "Medicine Water and wife, Mochi, with Romeo, the Cheyenne interpreter," and describing the couple’s confinement at Fort Marion.
Medicine Water and Mochi survived the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864 and were among the Cheyenne imprisoned at Fort Marion from 1875 to 1878.
