[Mathew Brady] Albumen print "View of the Navy Ordnance Yard, Washington, D.C." Washington, D.C.: Mathew Brady: 1866. Credited on mount recto in black type, "BRADY & CO.. / 352 PENNA. AVENUE." / "Views in the Navy Ordnance Yard, Washington, D.C. / JUNE, 1866."

Famous for his documentation of the Civil War, Matthew Brady (1822-1896) captured this view of the Navy Ordnance Yard in Washington, D.C. in June of 1866, just after the war's end. Cannons and ammunition are arrayed in the foreground, highlighting the manufacturing potential of Washington, D.C. Prefiguring the transition from conflict to Reconstruction, this image emphasizes the nation's military prowess but from a more industrial perspective. In the decades that followed the Civil War, the United States would emerge on the global stage as an industrial giant, with unmatched capabilities in manufacturing.
