Manuscript document. U.S. Steamer 'Calhoun, 27 Feburayr 1862. 2 pages, folio, on blue paper.

An interesting report of the USS Colorado recorded between February 27th and March 1st, 1862, shortly after she assisted in capturing the steamer Calhoun.

The USS Colorado was a 3-masted steam screw frigate launched on 19 June 1856. She joined the Navy's Gulf Blockading Squadron at the outbreak of teh Civil War and served as the flagship of the squadron commander, Commodore William Marvine.

The document here records their movements and actions at the end of February 1862: "At 6 PM the 'Colorado's' 2nd Launch & 1st cutter boats armed and crew equipped with Act'g Masters Taylor & Huggins in command came on board...By order of Capt. Bailey received on board the five prisoners taken on the 21st inst., as passengers."

The report continues: "At 12:15 PM anchored in 9 ft water off the entrance - sent an armed expedition, consisting 'Colorado' 2nd Launch + 1st cutter and 'Calhouns' 2nd cutter...the five prisoners, rec'd on board yesterday were, at their own request, landed at Bastian Bay. Expended 3 Parrott shell and 7 12 pdr shell and shrapnell at the retreating fleet. Two houses reported to be occupied by Lookouts in the employ of the rebel Govt were destroyed."
