Half plate outdoor daguerreotype. N.p., ca. 1848-1852. Full leatherette case.

This expansive landscape captures an authentic frontier staging ground on an open meadow clearing bordered by a dense tree line. Arranged horizontally across the middle ground is an active westward wagon company preparing to roll, featuring several canvas-topped prairie schooners and light baggage wagons hitched to paired draft teams of oxen and horses. Mounted pioneers on horseback are positioned along the column while dismounted emigrants and teamsters stand near the wagon tongues, wheels, and traces. The low prairie foreground recedes toward the tree-flanked encampment beneath open sky, evoking the vast spatial threshold of the Overland Trail.

Outdoor, field-taken daguerreotypes of any kind are among the rarest survivors of the medium, as transporting fragile, sensitized iodized silver plates, fuming boxes, and heavy field cameras into the elements required immense technical mastery. To encounter a half plate daguerreotype capturing an actual westward overland company during the zenith of the California Gold Rush and Oregon Trail migrations is an extraordinary photographic event.

Very good condition overall. The silvered plate displays strong contrast, clear legibility, and fine tonality. The plate surface exhibits typical light scattered spotting, faint peripheral tarnish along the mat edge, and minor handling marks beneath the glass consistent with an untouched early seal.
