An exceptionally rare and significant carte-de-visite self-portrait of the notable Civil War photographer, Alexander Gardner (1821–1882). In this striking studio pose, the Scottish-born Gardner celebrates his heritage, appearing in full Highland dress, complete with a kilt, sporran, diced hose, and a feathered glengarry.

This image is part of a fascinating series of self-portraits in which Gardner adopted various personas. Much like his famous "Mountain Man" self-portrait (where he donned western buckskins borrowed from frontiersman William F. M. Arny) this "Highlander" persona allows the viewer a rare glimpse into the private playfulness of a man otherwise known for documenting the grim realities of the American Civil War era.

Like the "Mountain Man" portraits, this CDV was also produced by Gardner's associates at the nearby studio of Philip and Solomons. Prominent D.C. stationers and publishers, they became Gardner's primary business partner soon after his much-publicized split with Matthew Brady. Their relationship was instrumental in the production and distribution of Gardner's most vital work, including the monumental Gardner’s Photographic Sketch Book of the War (1866) - the first published collection of Civil War photographs.

Self-portraits of Gardner are exceedingly scarce, with this Highland variant representing a primary document of his personal identity and Scottish roots. This is a scarce opportunity to acquire a unique portrait of an early American photographic legend.

The image exhibits fine detail and tonal range characteristic of Gardner’s studio work. Typical minor age-toning and light wear consistent with a 160-year-old albumen print.
