Horizontal cabinet card studio portrait on rounded-corner publisher's card mount. Salem, Oregon: Salem Art Co., ca 1880s–1890s. Photographer's imprint on mount recto. Mount verso blank.

This self-referential studio photograph captures the entire mechanics of 19th-century portraiture in action. At left, the photographer stands in profile at his massive studio camera on an adjustable elevating wooden stand, holding the lens cap to time the exposure. At right, the seated client poses rigidly upon a tufted stool with fringe trim, his head securely stabilized by an adjustable cast-iron posing rest visible behind him.

"Photographer-at-work" images that pull back the curtain on Victorian studio practice are exceptionally elusive. Rather than hiding the awkward tools of the trade, this composition deliberately puts them on full display - highlighting the heavy wooden view camera, large brass barrel lens, and the infamous iron head clamp used to prevent motion blur during long exposures. Pacific Northwest studio views of this meta-photographic nature are rare.

Very good. The print displays a soft, warm tone with clear definition. The mount remains sturdy and flat, showing light handling wear, faint edge toning, and a tiny pinhole/abrasion at the upper left margin edge not affecting the central composition.
