A portrait of a Cuban woman, elegantly rendered, with a bowl of native fruits framing the foreground. A natural landscape of trees and mountains can be seen in the back. Her expression, delicate and enigmatic, evokes comparison to the Mona Lisa.
The 'Vanguardia' movement, which held its prominence in the 1920s and 30s as a revolutionary artistic and literary trend, spread throughout Latin America with a concentration in Cuba. Utilizing European modernist themes, artists within this movement blended these styles with regional themes to forge an innovative and nationally centered artistic perspective. While seeking his education at the Professional School of Painting and Sculpture of Havana, Victor Manuel García Valdés (1897-1969) was a devotee of this movement, which inspired his artwork throughout his career. A standard of a modern Cuban aesthetic was created from this movement and from the impressive works of artists such as Victor Manuel.
