An abstract watercolor portrait of a woman. Her breasts are exposed as she angles her body toward the right. There appear to be at least two different animals surrounding the woman: a turtle to the right and a type of bird to the left.
Samuel Feijoo, a Cuban writer, editor, and artist known for his paintings and illustrations, was born in Las Villas. A largely self-taught artist and folklorist, Feijoo was a champion of low art, embracing abstracted depictions of everyday life. In the 1950s, he started a friendship with French painter Jean Dubuffet and became Head of the Folkloric Studies and Publications Department of the Central University of Las Villas in 1958. Also within his hometown, Feijoo became a promoter of other burgeoning artists' work during the 1960s and later served as the vice-president of the Union de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba (UNEAC).
