World's Columbian Exposition Chicago 1898. Woven silk stevengraph ribbon. N.p., 1893. Visible 3 1/4 x 13 5/8 in. Framed to 6 1/4 x 16 1/2 in.
A particularly large and fine example of late 19th-century American textile artistry, this souvenir ribbon was produced to commemorate the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois - famously known as the "White City." Utilizing a complex mechanical palette of vibrant reds, blues, and golds against a rich cream silk field, the ribbon presents a dense, beautifully rendered visual narrative celebrating both the quadricentennial of Christopher Columbus's landfall and the industrial might of late Victorian America.
The ribbon's design features exposition iconography, executed with the precision that defined Jacquard loom technology. The top features an ornate, illuminated title block reading "World’s Columbian Exposition, Chicago 1893." Below the title, a bald eagle clutching lightning bolts is perched atop a pair of terrestrial globes, set against a radiating sunburst and a vibrant American flag. The central vignette depicts the landing of Christopher Columbus in 1492. This scene is flanked below by two circular medallions: one capturing the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor, and the other showcasing the fair's architectural masterpiece, the Administration Building designed by Richard Morris Hunt. The bottom of the ribbon features an industrial landscape where modern steamships and locomotives converge, symbolizing the triumph of American transit and engineering.
During the 1893 Fair, massive, programmable looms were operated live within the Manufactures and Liberal Arts Building. Fairgoers stood captivated as these mechanical marvels wove these keepsakes in real time. While smaller, single-vignette silk bookmarks are occasionally encountered, this massive, multi-paneled display strip represents a highly desirable variant of Columbian Exposition ephemera.
