Wisconsin’s War cast iron still bank. N.p., circa. 1880s. Diam. 3 in. Obverse cast “Wisconsin’s War / Historic Eagle / Old Abe” with depiction of a bald eagle. Reverse has opening for coins and screw. With pedestal feet.
This cast iron bank was most likely made to commemorate “Old Abe,” the feathered mascot of the 8th Wisconsin Infantry. Old Abe, a bald eagle, participated in over 30 battles, including Second Corinth and the Siege of Vicksburg, and "avoided any injuries," according to the Wisconsin Veterans Museum. Abe was known to spread his wings and shriek during battle, which inspired the men of his regiment. He died on 26 March 1881, which may have inspired the creation of these banks.
Only few similar banks have sold previously at auction, making this a rare acquisition opportunity.
