Kenner Garrard. Nolan’s System for Training Cavalry Horses. New York: D. Van Nostrand, 1862.
8vo. Diagrams throughout. Original red cloth gilt illustrated. FIRST EDITION.
A first edition of the very rare cavalry training manual by Kenner Garrard (1827-1879), a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, who served in the 4th U.S. Artillery, 1st U.S. Dragoons, and 2nd U.S. Cavalry, serving as adjutant to future Confederate Generals Albert Sidney Johnston and Robert E. Lee. When the war began, Garrard, a loyal Unionist, was imprisoned by Confederates with U.S. troops under Maj. General David E. Twiggs. Once exchanged, he was appointed the colonel of the 146th New York Infantry and performed admirably, distinguishing himself at Gettysburg when he succeeded Brig. Gen. Stephen H. Weed after he was slain at Little Round Top. In 1863, he was appointed the major of the 3rd U.S. Cavalry and led a cavalry division in Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign.
A very scarce and desirable tactics manual.
