Sixth plate half-length studio portrait ambrotype. N.p., mid-1860s. Half leatherette case.
A portrait depicting two men that Pat Booth believed to be Cole Younger (1844–1916) and his brother, Jim Younger (1848–1902), the Missouri-born outlaws made infamous through their association with William Clarke Quantrill (1837–1865) and his partisan raiders during the Civil War. In the turbulent years that followed, the Youngers, together with Frank and Jesse James, achieved enduring notoriety as members of the James–Younger Gang, whose daring bank and train robberies became legend across the Reconstruction-era West.
The identification seems to have been based on the subjects' likeness to the Younger brothers and is speculative. Regardless, the men do certainly look the part of Missouri partisans.
Both men sport holstered pistols and cocky body language. An engaging portrait, the subjects crowd each other while the man on the left rests his hand on his friend's shoulder.
