Outdoor albumen group portrait of officers and crew of the USS Sangamon. Visible 5 x 8 in., framed to 13 3/8 x 10 3/8 in.
A large photograph of officers and crew of the USS Sangamon, a Passaic-class ironclad. Taken on the James River, some fifteen Navy men posed for this picture just behind the vessel's enormous anchor chain, while a cannon and presumably its crew can be seen in the background.
This ship was assigned to both North Atlantic and South Atlantic Blockade Squadron duty and played a pivotal role in shelling artillery positions and clearing mines during the Union's final thrust to capture Richmond.
Tastefully framed, this is a very striking War-period image of a well-fought monitor and her crew.
