[CIVIL WAR] US Model 1855 Pistol Carbine

.62 caliber smoothbore. 12" barrel. NSN. Bright finish, brass furniture, hardwood stock. Single shot muzzleloading percussion pistol with Maynard automatic tape priming lock, designed for detachable stock, swivel ramrod, sling ring in butt, folding leaf rear sight and blade front sight. Standard Springfield lock markings, dated 1856 at the tail, breech dated 1855 under rear sight, no visible cartouche on counterpane. Primer magazine door and rear sight are high quality aged replacements. Only 4,021 of these unique and somewhat ungainly single shot pistol carbines were produced at Springfield Arsenal circa 1855-1857. {ANTIQUE}

Fair. Bore heavily oxidized and pitted and bored out to smooth. Metal heavily oxidized with some pitting, scattered surface roughness and a mostly brown patina. Lock slightly grayer with legible markings. Barrel date visible. Brass with a medium golden patina. No visible markings in wood and no visible stock mating number on the buttcap. Mechanically functional action, primer mechanism intact and functional. Rear sight replaced, as is primer door. Wood well worn, cracked through the butt and grip and with a crack emanating from the front of the lock mortise. Otherwise wood with numerous scattered bumps, dings and mars.
