A collection of twenty (20) United States, New York, and Maine belt buckles. Also included is a cavalry hat insignia. Items include:

1. Maine "VMM" waist belt buckle. Die-stamped solder-filled brass. Lacking hooks. 2 13/16 x 1 11/16 in. Gavin 12; Kerksis 83; O'Donnell & Campbell 556 & 558.

A small-sized waist belt plate bearing the letters "VMM," representing "Volunteer Maine Militia." Modeled after the 1839 regulation infantry plates, these plates were taken up between the adoption of a state button in 1855 and the start of the war. Although the Federal Army switched to large waist belt plates for infantry by 1857, many states continued with the old pattern through 1862.

Several examples have been found in Virginia battlefields and camp sites. Examples completely filled with solder are scarce.

2. New York "SNY" enlisted infantry waist belt buckle. Die-struck rolled brass, solder-filled face, brass belt hooks. 3 1/2 x 2 1/4 in. Gavin 17; Kerksis 123-124; O'Donnell & Campbell 545-546.

A plate widely used by the first volunteer regiments from New York state. When the war erupted, Governor Edwin D. Morgan ordered 33,000 sets of infantry accoutrements from three different contractors. (O'Donnell & Campbell, p. 336).

3. New York "SNY" enlisted infantry waist belt buckle. Die-struck rolled brass, solder-filled face, brass belt hooks. 2 13/16 x 1 9/16 in. O'Donnell & Campbell 536.

An uncommon small waist belt plate patterned after the small 1839 regulation plate worn on a 1 1/2 in. belt. Representing the earliest SNY plates, it may even date to the Mexican-American War, when New York raised and outfitted seven volunteer regiments, sending two to the front.

4.  Excavated cavalry insignia. No loops. 3 3/8 x 1 3/4 in.

5. Seventeen (17) "US" regulation waist belt buckles. Largest 3 1/2 x 2 1/4 in.

An impressive collection of regulation Federal belt buckles. Some are excavated and show various levels of field use. A complete condition report is available upon request.

6. Oval "US" regulation waist belt solder-fill.
