ULYSSES S. GRANT: A FRAMED GROUP OF PHOTOGRAPHS, AUTOGRAPH, AND EPHEMERA

United States, 1860s–1879

An attractive, display-ready assemblage honoring Ulysses S. Grant, comprising:

1. “General Grant’s Log Cabin”—albumen photograph mounted to cabinet-format card (the Hardscrabble cabin near St. Louis), printed caption in the negative.

2. Two CDV portraits of Grant in uniform, albumen prints on original mounts, standard carte-de-visite format; one bust-length, the other three-quarter length.

3. Clipped signature, blue slip inscribed in Grant’s hand “U. S. Grant / Lt. Genl.” with contemporary date “July 1865” at right—an excellent wartime/post-Appomattox example of his autograph as Lieutenant General.

4. Admission ticket to a “Reception of Comrade U. S. Grant, Grand Army of the Republic” at the American Academy of Music, Philadelphia, Thursday Evening, December 16th, 1879 (printed in black on white card).

5. Small brass medal/ lapel device (likely G.A.R. or commemorative), mounted beneath the photograph.

Neatly window-matted with a typed identifications panel and housed in a period wooden frame; overall approx. [insert] in. (not examined out of frame).

As a coherent narrative from Grant’s frontier life at Hardscrabble, through his Civil War command, to his celebrated veteran’s status, this ensemble has strong display appeal and research value.
