Quarter plate hand-tinted tintype. Full leatherette case.
An excellent portrait of a triple-armed Yankee cavalryman. A large, full-standing view struck in front of what appears to be a St. Louis-style backdrop, this midwestern horse soldier rests one hand on the guard of his sword while using his opposite hand to steady the imposing Sharps carbine resting at his side. As if this was not sufficiently warlike, he also stuck a revolver behind his belt for emphasis. One additional unique feature of this great image is the young soldier's headgear - a jaunty slouch cap with both sides pinned up.
The photographer appears to have used a backdrop of a style associated with Enoch Long, who worked at Missouri's bustling Benton Barracks. Their use of subtle tinting on this plate, particularly to his uniform components, enhances an already strong photograph. While the rider's identity is not currently known, he certainly presented as the consummate United States cavalryman.
